Candle Care Tips: How to Get the Most from Your Handcrafted Candles

There’s nothing quite like the warm glow and inviting fragrance of a handcrafted candle. Whether you're winding down after a long day, entertaining friends, or simply creating a cozy atmosphere at home, taking proper care of your candle will help you enjoy it longer and more safely.

At Lakeside Mercantile, every candle is handcrafted in small batches using premium ingredients because we believe quality matters. With just a few simple candle care tips, you can maximize your candle's burn time, enjoy a stronger fragrance, and keep it looking beautiful from the first light to the last.

1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

One of the easiest ways to improve your candle's performance is by trimming the wick to approximately ¼ inch before each use.

A properly trimmed wick:

  • Creates a cleaner burn

  • Helps reduce soot

  • Prevents excessive flickering

  • Produces a more even flame

  • Extends the life of your candle

A wick trimmer makes this quick and easy.

2. Allow the Wax to Melt Across the Entire Surface

The very first burn is the most important.

Allow your candle to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container. This usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on the size of the candle.

Doing this helps prevent "tunneling," where the candle burns straight down the middle and leaves unused wax around the edges. A full melt pool helps your candle burn more evenly throughout its life.

3. Don't Burn Your Candle Too Long

While it may be tempting to leave your candle burning all evening, it's best to limit each burn to about 4 hours at a time.

Burning longer than recommended can:

  • Overheat the container

  • Shorten the candle's lifespan

  • Cause the wick to become unstable

After extinguishing the flame, allow the candle to cool completely before lighting it again.

4. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts

Drafts from ceiling fans, open windows, or air vents can cause your candle to burn unevenly and produce excess soot.

For the best performance, place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from moving air.

5. Keep the Wax Clean

Dust, wick trimmings, and other debris can collect on the surface of your candle over time.

Before lighting, remove any debris to help ensure a clean, even burn and a beautiful appearance.

6. Store Candles Properly

When not in use, store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Proper storage helps:

  • Preserve fragrance

  • Protect the wax from discoloration

  • Keep your candle looking its best

Replacing the lid after each use also helps keep dust away and preserves the fragrance.

7. Know When It's Time to Stop Burning

For safety, discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains in the bottom of the container.

This helps prevent the container from overheating and protects the surface underneath.
